If you are planning on touring Australia or undertaking business (attending a conference, business meeting etc) then you will need an Australian short stay visa that allows you to do this. Australian tourist visas are now known as Electronic Travel Authorities (ETA) and they are linked to your passport number.

ETA's are valid for 12 months from when they are granted and allow you to tour and stay or conduct your business in Australia for up to 3 months. They are also multiple entry short stay visas so you can travel in and out of Australia on your Australian Tourist visa as many times as you like within the 12 month validity period of the visa. If you are planning on staying longer than 3 months then you will need an Australian Tourist visa that allows you to do this. These visas will generally allow you to stay for up to 6 or 12 months and again these Australian short stay visas are multiple entry, so you can stay for up to 6 or 12 months on each entry.
